La r\u00e9ussite de la proc\u00e9dure donne un espoir et ouvre la porte \u00e0 des soins accessibles aux personnes atteintes de la maladie dans la r\u00e9gion proche de l\u2019institution adventiste du septi\u00e8me jour \u00e0 Loma Linda, en Californie, aux \u00c9tats-Unis, et dans les zones environnantes.<\/p>\n<p>Les m\u00e9decins de l\u2019H\u00f4pital pour Enfants ont travaill\u00e9 pendant pr\u00e8s d\u2019un an pour mettre en place un programme destin\u00e9 \u00e0 aider les patients en h\u00e9matologie, en particulier ceux atteints d\u2019h\u00e9mophilie et de dr\u00e9panocytose.<\/p>\n<p>Akshat Jain, directeur du service d\u2019h\u00e9matologie et d\u2019oncologie p\u00e9diatrique \u00e0 l\u2019H\u00f4pital pour Enfants, s\u2019est dit satisfait des r\u00e9sultats de la greffe et de ce que cela signifie pour les futurs patients atteints de dr\u00e9panocytose.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Nous avons cr\u00e9\u00e9 un programme efficace pour que les enfants et leurs familles atteints de cette maladie n\u2019aient pas besoin de chercher un traitement ailleurs. Ils ont acc\u00e8s \u00e0 ce traitement ici m\u00eame dans la r\u00e9gion, \u00bb a dit Akshat Jain.<\/p>\n<p>Cette proc\u00e9dure constituait \u00e9galement la premi\u00e8re greffe haplo-identique r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par l\u2019H\u00f4pital pour Enfants, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire que les cellules souches donn\u00e9es &#8211; par le p\u00e8re de la patiente &#8211; correspondaient \u00e0 moiti\u00e9 au g\u00e9nome des cellules souches de la patiente et ont \u00e9t\u00e9 modifi\u00e9es par l\u2019\u00e9quipe de transplantation pour remplacer les cellules sanguines malades.<\/p>\n<p>La patiente, Valeria Vargas-Olmedo, \u00e2g\u00e9e de 11 ans, \u00e9tait atteinte de dr\u00e9panocytose depuis sa naissance. Sa famille a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 rechercher un traitement l\u2019ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re apr\u00e8s qu\u2019elle se soit retrouv\u00e9e invalide, dans l\u2019incapacit\u00e9 de poursuivre ses activit\u00e9s quotidiennes comme aller \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole, monter dans une voiture ou m\u00eame marcher. Les m\u00e9decins ont indiqu\u00e9 qu\u2019elle souffrait de douleur chronique d\u00e9bilitante, de perte osseuse et de n\u00e9crose osseuse.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Elle ne souffre plus de la maladie et peut se r\u00e9int\u00e9grer dans le monde pour faire ce qu\u2019une enfant de 11 ans devrait faire, \u00bb a dit Dr Akshat Jain.<\/p>\n<p>La dr\u00e9panocytose provoque une p\u00e9nurie de globules rouges et donc une insuffisance en oxyg\u00e8ne dans le corps de l\u2019individu. Cela peut entra\u00eener une douleur chronique et d\u2019autres complications graves, telles que des infections, un syndrome thoracique aigu et des accidents vasculaires c\u00e9r\u00e9braux. Sans oxyg\u00e8ne, tout organe interne a de fortes chances de mourir.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Jain a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu\u2019en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral on retrouvait la maladie dans des populations comme celles qui vivent autour de l\u2019h\u00f4pital, en particulier au sein des populations hispaniques et afro-am\u00e9ricaines.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Jain a indiqu\u00e9 que son \u00e9quipe et lui traitaient environ 250 \u00e0 300 patients atteints de dr\u00e9panocytose dans le cadre du programme global de dr\u00e9panocytose de l\u2019H\u00f4pital pour Enfants &#8211; soit plus de patients que dans certains des plus grands programmes du m\u00eame type sur la c\u00f4te ouest am\u00e9ricaine.<\/p>\n<p>Clara Olmedo, la m\u00e8re de Valeria, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 : \u00ab Tout d\u2019abord, nous voulons remercier Dieu. Nous souhaitons \u00e9galement remercier Dr Jain et toute son \u00e9quipe de transplantation. Enfin, merci au p\u00e8re de Valeria &#8211; il a fait tout ce qui \u00e9tait en son pouvoir pour lui sauver la vie et lui redonner la sant\u00e9 en devenant donneur. Ma fille est beaucoup plus en mouvement maintenant : elle a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 marcher, elle mange et prend du poids, et elle est heureuse. Petit \u00e0 petit, elle retrouve une vie normale comme auparavant.<\/p>\n<p>La famille Vargas-Olmedo a encourag\u00e9 d\u2019autres familles qui luttent contre la dr\u00e9panocytose. \u00ab Pour les parents qui re\u00e7oivent les nouvelles de cette greffe et qui font face \u00e0 cette maladie, j\u2019esp\u00e8re qu\u2019ils seront encourag\u00e9s et qu\u2019ils r\u00e9aliseront que l\u2019H\u00f4pital pour Enfants est un excellent h\u00f4pital, \u00bb a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Clara Olmedo. \u00ab Il y a beaucoup de bons m\u00e9decins, des professionnels et d\u2019excellentes infirmi\u00e8res.
