Tegucigalpa, Honduras…[Libna Stevens/IAD]

Seventh-day Adventists in Honduras are mourning the loss of a pastor after a tragic automobile accident took his life. Pastor Rene Martinez, who was driving home after church business on August 16, was hit head-on by a semi-truck.

Pastor Martinez, 45, who was serving as the Sabbath School and Personal Ministries director, as well as in charge of church planting for the church in the Mid-Central American Union, was driving through the rain from a meeting in the northern part of the country when the accident occurred. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

A native of Guatemala, he served many years for the church throughout Central America as a pastor and conference president in Guatemala, as well as president of the Adventist University in Costa Rica.

A memorial service was held for him at the Adventist Central Church in Tegucigalpa on August 18, where union leaders and church and family members remembered his life and service to the church.

Pastor Martinez is survived by his wife Eda, and three teenage daughters, Rossany and twins Rubesly and Rosselly.
