Thousands paid tribute to the late Seventh-day Adventist Pastor Mozart Serrant during a special funeral service Feb. 25 in St. Joseph, Dominica. Pastor Serrant, who was recently appointed as a district pastor to northeastern Dominica, died Feb. 15 after being struck by a truck while standing in front of his home. He was 59.

More than 3,000 people attended the funeral service, including church leaders and Deputy Prime Minister of Dominica, Hon. Matthew Walters, Attorney General Hon Ian Douglas, other members of parliament and Seventh-day Adventists from Dominica and the nearby island of St. Lucia, where he had served as district pastor during the past four years.

Pastor James Daniel, communication director for the church in the Caribbean Union, says that Pastor Serrant and his brother Eslie Serrant “were engaged in conversation when the truck, evidently traveling at high speed, crossed the street and ran over both brothers.” Eslie died on the scene while Pastor Serrant died later at the Princess Margaret Hospital. Three occupants of a pick-up truck which had stopped at the Serrant’s home were injured in the accident as well.

Pastor Serrant began his service as a teacher in 1971, later becoming a minister in 1984 and serving as principal and district pastor. He is survived by his wife, Enis, and two children.
