Mayaguez, Puerto Rico….[IAD Staff]

Antillean Adventist University (AAU), located in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, recently completed a building to house its language and science programs. The new state-of-the art facility, which is the first major structure built on the campus since 1979, will also be the home of the university's information technology services department.

“For years we have been wanting to update our language and science labs,” says Yolanda Ferrer, director of Marketing and Alumni at AAU. “The university has several buildings that are 50 years old which have been maintained somewhat but they continue being old buildings. We are in real need of modern buildings that can include the most recent technological advances that can allow us to continue offering a high quality of service to our students.”

The new building is a big step towards beginning the process of upgrading the old buildings, according to Ferrer.

“The university has been growing during the past years, yet its physical plant has not experienced a parallel growth which has turned into an urgent challenge,” she said.

The inauguration, held during the university's 47th graduating exercises on May 24, 2008, drew the attention of church leaders and the local media.

The Language and Science Building began construction in November of 2006. It features laboratories for anatomy, biology, chemistry, physiology, and physics, as well as for interactive computerized languages, namely English and Spanish.

Dr. Myrna Costa, president of AAU, thanked those attending for their presence and support, as well as the administrators and board of trustees, who made the building possible, she said. Dr. Costa especially thanked Mr. Jose D. Dial, project director and Juan Casado, construction manager for their tireless efforts in ensuring the completion of the new facility.

Established in Puerto Rico in 1961, the Antillean Adventist University currently has nearly 900 enrolled students on campus and in its extension campus in Rio Piedras.
