A Seventh-day Adventist group was among dozens of musical artists who participated in a special program last week to honor Porfirio Lobo, the newly inaugurated president of Honduras. The program was held in Tiburcio Carias Andino Stadium in Tegucigalpa, the capital city, on Jan. 27, 2010.
The Amor y Fe musical group sang the national anthem in front of the crowd of more than 35,000 in the stadium. Millions more around the world watched the event on television.
“It was a proud moment for our church to see the group sing the national anthem,” said Walter Ciguenza, communication director for the church in the Mid-Central American Union headquartered in Honduras. “This was indeed a very important event for the country due to the situation it has gone through.”
Honduras’ previous government, led by ex-president Manuel Zelaya, was overthrown last June, sparking demonstrations in Tegucigalpa. The interim government was forced to increase military presence and impose a curfew which was in effect for months.
Composed of 14 members, Amor y Fe has been ministering to thousands with their Christian music since 1983.
