The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Puerto Rico recently appointed Dr. Obed Jimenez as the new president of Antillean Adventist University (AAU), located in Mayaguez. He was appointed during the university’s board meeting on Oct. 17.

An alumni of AAU, Dr. Jimenez previously served as vice president for religious affairs at the university. The presidency of the 50-year-old educational institution became vacant after former president Dr. Myrna Costa was called to serve as vice president at the Inter-American Division (IAD), headquartered in Miami, Florida. Dr. Costa accepted the new position during the 59th General Conference Session in June.

“This is an opportunity to accomplish God’s purpose for this institution so that His kingdom can continue here and in many more places as of Jesus’ character reflected in our alumni,” said Dr. Jimenez to the institution’s board members.

Dr. Jimenez, 46, was born in Brooklyn, NY. He has served the church in Puerto Rico for more than 24 years, the last 13 in various positions at AAU. In addition to vice president for religious affairs, he also served as dean of students and as a theology professor. Dr. Jimenez was also a district pastor. He holds a doctorate degree in religious education from Andrews University.

Dr. Jimenez is married to Marcia and has two children.

AAU was established in 1961 and today offers master degrees in education, curriculum, and school administration as well as more than two dozen undergraduate degrees.
