Global Youth Day (GYD), an initiative of the youth ministries department of the Seventh-day Adventist world church, will see thousands of young people involved in service projects in their communities on Mar. 19, 2022.
The annual initiative motivates young people to unite efforts and get out of their comfort zones to “Be the Sermon” as they show the love of Jesus through acts of kindness wherever they go.
This year’s overall focus is “Loving the Forgotten.” Whether it be a church member who might have been neglected or a community member who is facing pressing needs, young people will have the opportunity to seek out and make a difference in their lives, youth leaders said.
It’s about going beyond the pews to impact the community with purpose and passion, said Pastor Al Powell, youth ministries director for the church in Inter-America. Powell, who has been coordinating GYD efforts throughout the 24 unions, or church regions, said there is much excitement among youth leaders and young people.“Young people are enthused to serve despite a pandemic that limited many impact activities in 2020” said Powell. “We are very glad that there is still an avenue where they can serve and testify in a more collective way this year, bringing more impact throughout local communities.”
Activities planned throughout the Inter-American Division (IAD) on GYD include feeding and praying for individuals in homes, cities and rural communities, cleaning and refurbishing parks, sharing messages of hope through books, social media and text groups, visiting the sick in hospitals, orphanages and nursing homes, reaching out to those imprisoned, reaching out to former or missing church members, and much more, said Powell.
