The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in Mexico was recently recognized by Nuevo Leon’s Civil Protection Agency and the National Forest Commission, for its participation in the fight against the forest fires that swept through the La Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains in the northern part of Mexico last year.

During a Firefighter’s Day celebration in Monterrey on July 11, 2022, government agencies praised the selfless work of ADRA and its volunteers. The ceremony was held at the Mirador del Obispado Park where hundreds of firefighters were honored.

ADRA was the only non-government organization recognized during the event, said Rubén Ponce, ADRA Mexico financial director. Ponce was accompanied by ADRA coordinators from the Northeast Conference. who traveled to where the firefighters were providing water, assisting affected families with water pumps and hoses, during the fires that burned through 18,000 acres of mountain terrain.

“We didn’t expect this recognition, so it was such a nice surprise,” said Jairo Sánchez, communication director for ADRA North Mexico. Sanchez has been part of ADRA’s Emergency Response Team in Mexico for decades. “ADRA, along with its partners, entities, and volunteers, is always working in favor of the most vulnerable persons. We were  happy to assist in Nuevo Leon through the devastating fires and will continue to do so whenever the need arises.”
