The Seventh-day Adventist Church in the small Caribbean island of Tobago recently experienced a large influx of new members after an aggressive evangelistic effort throughout the island. 567 new believers were baptized as a result of the effort.

The six-week, history-making endeavor involved all 30 Adventist churches on the island. The 31st church, Good News Adventist Temple, was erected on the tent site in a matter of only two weeks during the campaign.

“It was the biggest result in Tobago,” said Pastor Claudius Morgan, the evangelist in the East Caribbean Conference who conducted the evangelistic tent meetings every night with the help of local church leaders and members. “There was never a night when the tent was empty, the people just kept coming.”

Hundreds of church members through the main streets of Scarborough and gathered on the beach on May 31, 2008, for the massive baptism.

Pastor Morgan, who has been an evangelist for more than 10 years, says that he was impressed with the need for the gospel in Tobago.

“Accepting the gospel in these last days is extremely difficult, even in Tobago, but the people were hungry for food and the Lord fed them nightly.” he said, adding that the dedication and participation of the laity and church leaders was very impressive to see.

The new church building can fit 500 people and provide the necessary classrooms for children's programs.

Organized less than five years ago, the Seventh-day Adventist Tobago Mission is part of the Caribbean Union headquartered in Trinidad, and has more than 8,000 church members worshiping in 31 churches.
