Dr. L. Herbert Fletcher, a Seventh-day Adventist former educator and leader in Inter-America, died in Miami, Florida on November 5, 2009, from health complications. He was 79 years old.

“The Inter-American Division has had the blessing of having great leaders in the department of education,” said Pastor Israel Leito, president of the church in Inter-America. “Dr. Fletcher distinguished himself in that his tenure in the department was characterized by great advances in the area of education. He was the originator of the Inter-American Division's Theological Seminary.”

“We will always be indebted to Dr. Fletcher for his service for the youth in the Inter-American Division,” Pastor Leito said. “Our prayers go out to the Fletcher family.”

Lee Herbert Fletcher was born in Black River, Jamaica on December 2, 1929. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Columbia Union College and a Master's Degree in Systematic Theology from Andrews University in 1960.

Dr. Fletcher began his more than 44 years of church service as a teacher and district pastor in West Jamaica. He served as youth director and education director at the West Indies Union and later served as president of the then West Indies College, now Northern Caribbean University, in Mandeville, Jamaica. He continued on to serve as education director at the Inter-American Division headquarters from 1981 until his retirement in 1995.

Fletcher is survived by his wife Olive, children Herbert and Barbara, and five grandchildren.

A service is scheduled to take place, Sunday, December 6, 2009, at Miami Temple Church.
