In St. Thomas, Andrews University Students Remove Hurricane Debris at Largest Adventist Church

A group of students and leaders from Andrews University recently spent a day clearing out fallen walls, fallen branches and debris from the largest Seventh-day Adventist Church on St. Thomas, destroyed by Hurricane Irma last year. The group of more than 50 stepped out of a cruise-mission trip in the Caribbean to tidy up the Philadelphia Adventist Church, nestled in the capital city of Charlotte Amalie. Youth Ready to Mobilize for Service on Global Youth Day

Thousands of Seventh-day Adventist young people around the world are learning to be the hands and feet of Jesus, to “Be the Sermon,” as the Global Youth Day (GYD) theme states. Through coordinated efforts in each of the 13 World Church regions, youth are recapturing a vision for service and learning there is more to faith than simply going to church. This initiative began in 2013 under former Seventh-day Adventist Youth Director Gilbert Cangy’s leadership. It is one day set aside for youth (primarily ages 15-25) to specifically focus on doing acts of kindness in their communities.

GYC Convention Emphasizes Practical Outreach

It’s an unusually hot December day when Janelle Glass walks by the row of yellow school buses lined up outside of the Phoenix Convention Center, the scourging heat tanning her Tennessean winter skin. It’s Friday at the annual GYC convention, to veteran “GYC’ers” also known as outreach day. A bus stops at the valet section, and Janelle hops on, finding a spot on the front seat. “The first time I went door to door I was in Washington state for the Youth Rush [literature evangelism] program,” she says. One of the books she sold was The Great Controversy, which is the same book she has with her today, one copy for a divine appointment.

Why Seventh-day Adventists Are Not Fundamentalists

“Seventh-day Adventists are not fundamentalists,” said Andrews University Church History professor Nicholas Miller in the opening plenary of the “Situating Adventist History” conference on the campus of Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, Maryland, United States, on Jan. 8. The Association of Seventh-day Adventist Historians event, sponsored by the Office of Archives, Statistics, and research and Washington Adventist University, brought dozens of Seventh-day Adventist historians, researchers, and professors together for two days of presentations, Q&A sessions, and discussions.
