In 2021, Alexa Romero, from Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico, a student at Montemorelos University, faced a health crisis that not only changed her life but also deepened her faith.

The story began during Alexa’s third semester of high school, while taking online classes. One day, her professor called on her multiple times, but she couldn’t hear or respond. This confusion was followed by frequent headaches, dizziness, and memory loss—symptoms that soon became a daily struggle.

“I was at church, leading the children’s story, when suddenly I didn’t know what I was doing there, or why the kids were sitting in front of me. It was terrifying,” Alexa recalls. Alongside her memory problems, she began to suffer from vision and mobility issues. What had initially seemed like a severe migraine turned out to be something much more serious.

After several medical tests and consultations, Alexa, only 16 at the time, received the devastating diagnosis: a brain tumor. The doctors warned that if surgery wasn’t performed immediately, she would lose her vision permanently. Faced with this grim possibility, Alexa found strength and refuge in her faith. “I knew I had only two choices: trust in God or fight alone, and fighting alone was never an option,” she says.

The tumor was linked to an extreme hormonal imbalance, with her prolactin levels far exceeding normal levels. While the doctors insisted on surgery, an endocrinologist in Cancun, who had reviewed her case, suggested cabergoline treatment. Cabergoline helps reduce prolactin levels in the blood. Despite the risk of losing her sight, Alexa decided to place her trust in this non-invasive approach.

The weeks that followed were an emotional rollercoaster. Though her symptoms improved, her vision remained gone. But in January 2022, during a family worship service, something extraordinary happened. In a deeply personal prayer, Alexa surrendered completely to God’s will. “I told God that if His plan was for me to remain blind, I would accept that and serve Him with joy. But if that was not His will, I asked Him to restore my sight,” she shares. As she finished her prayer, something miraculous occurred: when she opened her eyes, her vision was fully restored. “I saw my mom, my brother, and even a mouse running across the room. God had given me back my sight!”

The news left everyone in astonishment, including her doctor, who couldn’t explain how the tumor had shrunk so dramatically. With her sight restored, Alexa not only continued her treatment but also embraced a new purpose: to serve God through music. Though she had initially planned to pursue a career in physical therapy, a providential encounter with staff from Montemorelos University helped her realize that her true passion was music. Within three months, she completed the entrance exams and all the necessary requirements, ultimately gaining acceptance into the university’s music program.

Yet, the challenges weren’t over. In early 2023, Alexa experienced another setback when her symptoms returned. She fainted again, this time in her dorm room. While her tumor had shrunk, it had caused some brain damage. But despite these challenges, Alexa’s faith and resolve remained unshaken. After receiving treatment, she stabilized once more. “I’m so grateful to God. I know He has a plan for me, and I make the most of every opportunity I have here at the university,” she says with a smile.

Despite the many obstacles she has faced, Alexa remains steadfast in her belief that her life is in God’s hands. As her health continues to be closely monitored, her passion for music and her desire to serve others have only grown stronger. From selling popsicles in Chetumal to fund her education, to inspiring those around her with her story, Alexa lives each day as a living testament to the symphony of faith she has chosen to follow.

Today, Alexa’s journey at Montemorelos University is a powerful testimony to the transformative power of miracles and faith. Even though her health challenges prevent her from fully dedicating herself to engaging in literature evangelism, she feels a strong calling to do so and is preparing to share God’s love through her testimony during the upcoming literature evangelism campaign on campus.
