Adventist Attorneys Admitted to the Bar of US Supreme Court

On November 1, a group of eight Seventh-day Adventist attorneys from across the United States were admitted as members to the bar of the United States Supreme Court. The event was organized by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Office of General Counsel. General Counsel, Karnik Doukmetzian sponsored their admission and officially moved the names during the ceremony and Chief Justice John Roberts admitted the attorneys. Those admitted were Harold Cleveland Jr., Allison Dichoso, Theodore Flo, Meredith Jobe, Maria McPhaull, Josue Pierre, Leesa Thomas, Jesus Uriarte.

Adventists Mark Reformation’s 500th Anniversary with Launch of New Book

Exactly 500 years to the day after Martin Luther is said to have posted his 95 theses at the door of Wittenberg Castle church, Seventh-day Adventists have published a new book that explores the profound—and complicated—legacy of the Protestant Reformation. The book, A Conversation on the Reformation, Christian Identity, and Freedom of Conscience, was launched October 31 at the church’s General Conference world headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, by Ganoune Diop, director of Public Affairs and Religious Liberty (PARL). In introducing the publication, Diop said the goal was to study the impact of the Reformation on a core Adventist value—the freedom of religion and belief.

Adventist Communicators “Build Bridges” at Annual Convention

Although a cool fall rain streamed outside for most of the event, spirits were bright, minds were eager, and conversations were lively at the 2017 Society of Adventist Communicators (SAC) convention held in Portland, Oregon, United States, on Oct. 19-21. A blend of more than 250 professionals and students, mostly from North America, attended communication workshops, expert panel discussions, area media tours, special worship services, and an Adventist film screening — all geared toward “Building Bridges” of communication with other Adventists and within the community.

Adventist Church in North America Inaugurates New Headquarters

Early morning clouds gave way to bright sunshine on Oct. 26, 2017, as the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America (NAD) welcomed guests to the grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony at its new headquarters in Columbia, Maryland, United States. “This is our home…we are delighted you are here,” welcomed Daniel R. Jackson, current NAD president. Jackson described the purpose of the headquarters, saying, “This building does not stand for human progress, for human ingenuity. It stands to serve the purposes of the almighty God.”

Study Finds Consuming Nuts Strengthens Brainwave Frequencies

A new study by researchers at Loma Linda University (LLU) Health has found that eating nuts on a regular basis strengthens brainwave frequencies associated with cognition, healing, learning, memory and other key brain functions. An abstract of the study of the Adventist-managed institution in Loma Linda, California, United States was presented in the nutrition section of the Experimental Biology 2017 meetings in San Diego, California. Published in The FASEB Journal, the study can be accessed online.

German Young People Urged to Be Missionaries at Home

President of the Seventh-day Adventist world church Ted N.C. Wilson urged hundreds of young Germans to make their homeland their first mission field. Wilson, speaking at an Adventist Theological Society (ATS) youth convocation near Hanover, Germany, thanked German Adventists for years of dedicated mission service around the world. But he noted that the church’s 35,000 German members face a major challenge reaching their highly secularized country of nearly 83 million people today.

Mission-minded Physician Unexpectedly Delivers Baby at World Church Headquarters

A physician praying to be used by God after hearing an Annual Council sermon about mission work in the cities unexpectedly delivered a baby in the parking lot of the Seventh-day Adventist world church’s U.S. headquarters. Dr. Yvette C. Ross Hebron delivered a healthy baby boy in the car of the parents, who had been rushing to the hospital but pulled into the church’s parking lot in Silver Spring, Maryland, after getting lost shortly before 10 a.m. on Oct. 12. Hebron said she believed God arranged the events. “The most wonderful opportunity in response to our prayers was orchestrated by the Master,” she said.

Redwood Adventist Academy Destroyed by California Wildfire

On Monday, Oct. 9, the Tubbs Fire—a wildfire that has burned at least 28,000 acres in Napa and Sonoma counties in Northern California—swept into the Larkfield-Wikiup area of Santa Rosa, California, United States and destroyed Redwood Adventist Academy, located on Mark West Springs Road. No students or faculty were on campus at the time. For much of Monday, the fate of the K-12 school was unclear. Rumors spread, but no one knew for sure what had happened.

Adventist Church in Spain Appeals for Peace and Brotherhood

The Spanish Union Conference region of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has released an official statement condemning any manifestation of violence and advocates for respect, peace, and love. Below is the full text of the statement. In the face of a growing climate of confrontation in the Catalonia region and recent events there, the Spain Union Conference would like to express its concern and to make an appeal to the brotherhood of believers and unbelievers alike. No matter their ideology, all are called to embrace the Christian Gospel perspective, which implies respect, peace, and charity as embodied by our example and living hope Jesus Christ.

In the Face of Financial Challenges, the Adventist Church Refocuses on Stewardship

The chief financial officer/treasurer (CFO) of the General Conference (GC) encourages members to return to systematic giving and increase support for stewardship ministries. “Since the 1980’s the emphasis in stewardship has somehow dwindled,” Juan Prestol-Puesán, GC CFO, told members of the Executive Committee during the 2017 Annual Council. “Teaching giving is out of fashion. It’s not something that attracts. It is a lot more attractive to give to projects.”
