ASI and Adventist Church join forces on Total Member Involvement

Nearly all Seventh-day Adventist world division presidents attended ASI’s annual convention for the first time as church leadership stepped up efforts to encourage every church member to actively share the gospel as part of its Total Member Involvement program. Twelve of the 13 division presidents and Rick McEdward, president of the Adventist Church in the Middle East and North Africa, flew to the U.S. state of Arizona to participate in the annual gathering of lay people: business owners, individual professionals, and supporting ministries.

Adventist Church membership reaches 19.5 million

The Seventh-day Adventist Church’s official membership passed 19.5 million members in the first half of 2016, powered in part by a record 100,000 baptisms in Rwanda. “Praise the Lord! There are now more than 19.5 million Adventists worldwide!” the Adventist Church’s Office of Archives, Statistics, and Research said in announcing the new figure on Twitter.

Young Adventist entrepreneurs share secrets for success

An overflow crowd of young Seventh-day Adventist entrepreneurs listened captivated Wednesday as a serial entrepreneur who fled Iraq as a child and a Sabbath-keeping clothing boutique owner shared their secrets for success at a first-ever conference of young Adventist entrepreneurs. About 120 people attended the opening day of the two-day Fruition Lab conference on the sidelines of the annual ASI convention in Phoenix, Arizona.

New study links alcohol to 7 cancers

A new study linking alcohol consumption to at least seven kinds of cancer reinforces the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s stance to shun all alcohol, a top Adventist physician said Tuesday. The study, published in most recent issue of the scientific journal Addiction, found that drinking even low or moderate amounts of alcohol causes cancer of the oropharynx, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colon, rectum, and breast.

French Adventists express compassion after killing of priest

Seventh-day Adventist believers in France expressed solidarity and compassion after a hostage-taking in a Roman Catholic church left an 86-year-old priest dead and another person seriously injured. “When a church is desecrated, it is the believers who are suffering,” French Adventist leaders said in the statement released by the church’s Inter-European Division, whose territory includes France.

In Germany, Adventists reach out after 3 violent attacks

The leader of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Germany’s Bavaria region called on church members to reach out to their communities in a special way after three violent attacks in less than a week left the country reeling. Adventist believers joined people across Germany in expressing shock and sorrow after an 18-year-old German-Iranian student killed nine people at the Olympia Mall in Munich on Friday evening.

Adventist Church to release major cinematic production in October

The Seventh-day Adventist Church will release the largest cinematic production in the denomination’s history in October: a dramatic depiction of the birth and development of the early Advent movement. “Tell the World,” produced by church-owned Hope Channel in Australia, brings to life the story of Adventist pioneers with an unprecedented cast of 95 actors, 157 crew members, and 1,000 extras.

New report says record 1.26 million people joined church last year

An all-time record 1.26 million people joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 2015 as the number of daily accessions matched those first seen when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the early Christian church, according to the Adventist Church’s new 2016 Annual Statistical Report.

7 Adventists injured in French truck tragedy

Seventh-day Adventist leaders appealed to local church members to assist those affected by a truck attack that killed at least 84 people and injured many others, including seven Adventist believers, in the French city of Nice. A large truck plowed through a huge crowd of people watching a Bastille Day fireworks celebration on the night of July 14, leaving a 1 ½-mile (2-kilometer) trail of bloodshed before police shot the driver dead.

1,500 flee to Adventist compound amid fighting in South Sudan

About 1,500 people have fled to the compound where the Seventh-day Adventist Church and ADRA have their main offices in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, to escape renewed violence. Hundreds of people have been killed since rival soldiers began fighting in the African city last Thursday. South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir, called for a cease-fire on Monday, but many people have stayed away from their homes as they waited to see whether it would hold.

Adventists hold high-level Moscow talks about law restricting missionary work

Seventh-day Adventist Church leaders have raised concerns with senior Russian officials about new legislation that would severely restrict missionary activity in Russia by outlawing home churches and the free distribution of religious literature. The legislation — part of a raft of antiterrorism bills — was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin into law on July 7, days after the lower and upper houses of parliament rapidly approved it in separate votes.
