In Dominica, ADRA delivers in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Erika

Days after Tropical Storm Erika devastated the Caribbean Island of Dominica, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in Dominica, with the help of local Adventist church member volunteers, are active in providing meals to those left homeless from the most affected communities on the island. The storm hit the small island of approximately 72,000 people on Aug. 27, triggering mudslides, destroying roads, bridges and homes. Over 30 people died and dozens went missing.

In West Venezuela, Church continues to expand amidst challenges

Against a background of serious challenges, spiraling inflation and a shortage of basic necessities, the Seventh-day Adventists in Venezuela continues to be faithful and its territory continues to rapidly expand, according to top administrators of the church in the Inter-American Division (IAD). IAD President Pastor Israel Leito completed a trip in Venezuela where three new missions were organized in the West Venezuela Union. The church there oversees five conferences, and three new missions.

64-year-old Adventist finishes world’s 6 top marathons

Gary Rittenbach’s full-time job is running between computers as director of academic computing at Walla Walla University, a Seventh-day Adventist institution in College Place, Washington. His other big pursuit is running. He’s good at it — so good, in fact, that he recently joined a small club of runners who have completed all six of the world’s top marathons: New York, Chicago, Berlin, Boston, Tokyo, and London.

In Colombia, Adventist students are challenged to be missionaries in their secular university campuses

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Colombia asserted hundreds of its members studying across public campuses and working professionals of their value and role in becoming disciples of Christ during a three-day event held in Chachipay, Cundinamarca, Sep. 4-6, 2015. Some 300 university students from 35 universities were challenged to become missionaries by developing leadership skills, committing to evangelism and serving the church, the community, and their campuses. In addition, 150 Adventist professionals also participated in the training.

Adventists serve healthy food at king’s coronation

Is Seventh-day Adventist food fit for a king? The new king of Tonga apparently thinks so. With King Tupou VI’s approval, thousands of guests at his coronation dined on wholesome breakfast cereals and soymilk produced by the Adventist Church-owned Sanitarium Health & Wellbeing food giant. “[We] are fairly sure that this is a first in our history,” a Sanitarium spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Adventist youth initiative receives government award in Vietnam

An innovative Adventist youth program in the church’s Southeast Asia territory (SSD) has recently earned praise from local government leaders in Vietnam. One Year in Mission (OYIM) Vietnam volunteers received a certificate of governmental appreciation for two community projects in ward 9 Phu Nhuan district during an August 27 ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon.

ADRA cares for refugees in Europe’s migrant crisis

As Europe grapples with a migrant crisis, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency said it is working overtime to care for vulnerable families in Serbia, a main entry point for refugees fleeing to the continent. ADRA has teamed up with the United Nations and three other entities to open an asylum information center that provides reliable information about refugee rights and other resources in Serbia’s capital, Belgrade.

New Adventist School in Puerto Rico triples enrollment

Seventh-day Adventists in eastern Puerto Rico are beaming with joy at the growth of its newest school on the island of Vieques--an island-municipality of the commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Vieques Adventist Academy began its second school year last month, with 47 students, an amount triple the number enrolled in the school last year when the school began as a pilot project with 15 students, church leaders said.

In North Mexico, Adventist Hospital coordinates over 500 eye surgeries in five days

More than 520 low-income individuals from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, received eye surgeries thanks to a joint collaboration between La Carlota Adventist Hospital, the non-profit organization Medical Ministry International and a group of Christian ophthalmologists from the United States. Patients crowded the Vision Institute Center in La Carlota Hospital, located in Montemorelos, Mexico, last month to benefit from the five-day medical initiative.

Adventist Church urges compassion amid Europe’s migrant crisis

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Europe called for compassion and prayer Thursday amid a migrant crisis that saw hundreds of migrants stage protests in France and Hungary and the bodies of other migrants wash up in Turkey this week. Desperate migrants and asylum seekers have flooded into Europe by the thousands from the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia this summer, leaving the continent divided over how to deal with them.

At Adventist request, Rome will name square after Martin Luther

Rome will name a central square after Protestant reformer Martin Luther in response to a request by the Seventh-day Adventist Church and with the support of the Roman Catholic Church. The square on Oppian Hill, a park area that overlooks the Colosseum in the central Monti district, will be named Piazza Martin Lutero in honor of Luther’s achievements on Sept. 16.

Adventist owner turns hair salon into free clinic for a day

Seventh-day Adventist businesswoman Eileen McKenzie is not just cutting hair in her hairstyling salon. In April, McKenzie organized a fashion event to bring new life to the shopping center where she works in Newtown, a sleepy Welsh town about 170 miles (280 kilometers) northwest of London.
