Activities will begin this weekend in the West Indies to mark 100 years of growth and development of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in that region. The highlight of the celebration will be a service of thanksgiving and praise on Saturday, July 1, at the North Street Church in Kingston, Jamaica.

Pastor Israel Leito, president of the church in Inter-America, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the Sabbath morning church service, which will be broadcast live on Jamaica’s Love 101 Radio. Viewers in other parts of the world will be able to enjoy the service via the internet at www.wiunion.org. It will also be carried live to viewers via cable on Visions Television Network (VTN).

Other activities planned for the centennial celebrations include: One hundred days of prayer and praise and an exhibition on the history of the West Indies Union Conference, which will be mounted, transported and displayed in all the island groups of the union territory. There will also be newspaper features and praise reunion concerts throughout the territory, as well as a symposium and awards ceremony to recognize 100 outstanding individuals both within and outside the church.

The West Indies Union was formed in 1906 to comprise all the conferences and missions in the Caribbean and Central America. At the time of formation, the union had 4,000 members. Today the membership stands at over 240,000.
