President of Northern Caribbean University (NCU) Dr. Trevor Gardner was recently awarded the 175th Anniversary Medal in Praise of the Quintessential Miconian at Mico University College, in Jamaica. Dr. Gardner was among 14 distinguished graduates of the Mico University College who were awarded at the institution’s ceremony for the annual presentation of graduates. The recipients were awarded for making significant contributions in the areas of education, leadership and community development.

Dr Gardner is a keen researcher and a committed advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable. He also demonstrates an interest in the brain drain from the Caribbean, the development of mathematics and science instruction, the impact of schooling on males and is expanding his interest in the broad spectrum of the arts among Caribbean students.

An exemplary administrator and educator, Dr Gardner has served in several universities in the United States as well as in the Caribbean – Northern Caribbean University and University of the Southern Caribbean (USC). He has creditably served at USC as president between 2004 and 2011 and was a former vice president for academic administration at NCU from 2000 to 2003.

In addition to the foregoing, his professional stewardship includes authoring four books in the field of education as well as contributing to other publications. An international student of Japanese education, Dr. Gardner has focused on the training and selection of Japanese administrators. He has served the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago as team leader for accreditation of tertiary institutions and is currently a member of the University Council of Jamaica. He has also successfully established working relationships with Brazilian and Dominican Republic universities.
