Bombing Condemned — The Oct. 1 bombing of a tourist area in Indonesia drew condemnation from the South Pacific region of the Adventist church. “It is shocking to have to respond to another bombing, following the deaths of so many people in London earlier this year and in Bali in 2002,” said Pastor Laurie Evans, regional church president. “We are praying for those who have been deeply and personally affected.”
Humanitarian Work — The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is providing food security for more than 100,000 people in Jamaica, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Niger and Mongolia. ADRA is shipping food to famine-struck areas in Niger and has provided seeds to help farmers in other places recover crops.
New Name –The newly merged Office of Global Mission and Office of Mission Awareness at the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s world headquarters will now be known as the Office of Adventist Mission. Global Mission, the church’s initiative to start new congregations in unentered areas, will continue to be a major focus. But Adventist Mission will be a much broader umbrella to promote not only Global Mission, but many and varied aspects of the church’s mission activities. The Web site will be www.adventistmission.org in addition to the www.global-mission.org site.
Preaching Lectureship — The 48th annual H.M.S. Richards Lectureship on Biblical Preaching, known for hosting leading Christian preachers and evangelists, will be held at Andrews University Oct. 30 to 31. Sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, the lectureship — named for H.M.S. Richards, Sr., a pioneer religious broadcaster and renowned Adventist preacher — seeks to advance the theory and practice of Bible-based, Christian preaching among both professional clergy and lay persons.
Bridge-Building — A series of lectures named for Bert B. Beach, the recently retired Seventh-day Adventist church statesman, encouraged intercultural and interfaith dialogue as a means of bridge building. The lectures, “God, Jesus and Dialogue” were held Oct. 17 and 18 at Newbold College, in England. Speaker Professor Paul G. Weller from the University of Derby told the group dialogue that encourages careful listening would not only help individuals to understand the “other” but also oneself. Next year’s speaker will be Lord Carey of Clifton — the Right Rev. Dr. George Carey, former Archbishop of Canterbury.
Cops Helping Kids — On Oct. 25, helicopters from police departments across Southern California flew into the San Bernardino International Airport bearing toys for children at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. The seventh annual event was co-hosted by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s office, the Riverside Police, and the Riverside County Sheriff’s departments. Local motorcycle officers escorted the procession from the airport to the hospital. The delivery is a result of toy drives at various police departments.
