Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico…[Comunicando UM/IAD Staff]
Montemorelos Universtiy (MU) of Seventh-day Adventist was recognized for its active work in recycling waste products during a special event held Nov. 14 at Parque de los Niños in Monterrey, Mexico. The event, which was part of a recycling fair was hosted by the Environmental and Natural Resources Protection Agency of the State of Nuevo Leon.
Montemorelos University was the only university to be recognized in this event among five other schools and five businesses.
More than 2,000 students from state schools participated in the event and were able to visit folkloric exhibits on recycling and participate in workshops that taught them how to reuse trash while using their imagination and creativity.
Among the main products to recycle emphasized in the fair were aluminum, plastic, glass, paper, and organic material.
The recycling program, which is headed by MU’s Ecology Center, began in January 2003 and has already collected 21 tons of paper as of this month according to Emiline Matos, engineer in charge of the program. She says the project has been highly satisfactory. The recycled paper from the campus, along with plastics, metals and glass collections, are taken to the recycling center in Monterrey. The money collected has been used for educational programs on recycling and for the purchase of containers used throughout the campus as trash deposits, as well as other materials for the project.
