A team of four students from the Adventist-run Northern Caribbean University (NCU) recently won the national Microsoft Software Imagine Cup. The NCU team, called Left Clik, from the university's computer and information sciences department, beat other national and Caribbean universities for the title.
Under the tutelage of department chair Kenrie Hylton and guidance coach Henry Osbourne, the NCU team of Shawn Mclean, Trevoir Williams, Derron Brown, and Dwayne Samuels are preparing to face off against other teams from South America for the regional title on May 26.
This It is the fifth year the university has competed in the Microsoft Software Imagine Cup competitions. Last year they came in third in the world finals, were regional champions in 2007, made second finalist in the national competition in 2006 and made 6th overall in the world competitions in 2005.
This year, Microsoft has assigned the Imagine Cup teams to solve one of the eight United Nations (UN) Millennium Goals. The NCU team is focusing on developing software which will help eradicate extreme hunger and poverty.
NCU teammates are hopeful as they prepare for the next challenge in about two weeks, and then possibly onto Cairo, Egypt for the world championship early in July.
