The Andrews Memorial Hospital (AMH) and Northern Caribbean University’s (NCU) Team Xormis, were among twelve individuals and entities who were the recipient of the 2010 Gleaner Honor Awards for their outstanding contribution to nation building.

AMH, which started as ‘massage and hydropathic treatment rooms’ in Kingston in 1910, was recognized for excellence in health and wellness.”

“We are delighted that we have been recognized as the hospital that delivers cutting edge service,” said Mr. Homer McKenzie, Assistant Administrator at AMH.

In its overview of the hospital the Gleaner said “Andrews Memorial Hospital has become known for its comfortable facilities and, over the years, has proven to be a first pick for patients desiring top-class treatment during their most difficult times. And it is only getting better.”

Offering cutting-edge medical services which include CT scans, ultrasound, lithotriptor, surgery, maternity care, dental care and a pharmacy, AHM will soon add two additional operating theaters under a partnership with its ‘sister’ institution, Florida Hospital

NCU’s Team Xormis, who won the Interoperabilty Category at the eight annual Microsoft Imagine Cup World Finals on July 8, 2010 in Warsaw, Poland, was presented with a special award for Excellence in Science and Technology. The team which comprises Shawn McLean, Dwayne Samuels, Derron Brown and Markel Mairs, competed against 94 teams before going to the finals to beat Brazil and Indonesia. They developed a software, which may be used by non-governmental organizations and charities in the distribution of relief supplies.

“Words can’t express the way we feel,” said Xormis team member Dwayne Samuels. “To be chosen by the Jamaica Gleaner, the oldest (176 years old) and largest newspaper company in the Island is something really remarkable. Persons in our age group (average age of 20) are not normally privileged to receive an award of this nature, so it is really something amazing, which we hope will change the way people view technology.”

Since 1979, The Gleaner Company has been recognizing outstanding individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to improving the quality of life in Jamaica, at any time during the last twelve months, or with the likelihood of bringing about such a change in the immediate future.

This year the winners were selected from the categories of Art and Culture, Public Service, Sports, Education, Science and Technology, Health and Wellness, Entertainment, Business and Voluntary Service
